چکیده

X-ray diffraction data obtained under nonhydrostatic compression of a polycrystalline sample yield an estimate of the single-crystal elasticity tensor of the material when analyzed using appropriate equations. The analysis requires as input the aggregate shear modulus from independent measurements. The high-pressure elastic moduli of face-centered-cubic FeO, body-centered-cubic iron (a-Fe), and the pressure-induced hexagonal close-packed iron (e-Fe) are obtained. This analysis currently provides the only method of determining single-crystal elasticity tensors in the megabar pressure range and of studying elasticity of very high-pressure phases. Single-crystal elasticity and sound velocities of (Mg0.94Fe0.06)O ferropericlase to 20 GPa

[1] The single-crystal elastic properties of high-spin (Mg0.94Fe0.06)O ferropericlase were measured by Brillouin spectroscopy on a sample compressed to 20 GPa with diamond anvil cells using methanol-ethanol-water as a pressure-transmitting medium. At room pressure, the adiabatic bulk (K0S) and shear (m0S) moduli are K0S = 163 ± 3 GPa and m0S = 121 ± 2 GPa, in excellent agreement with ultrasonic...

Strength and elasticity of niobium under high pressure

High purity polycrystalline niobium contained in boron-epoxy gasket was compressed in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). The pressure was increased in steps of 3 GPa and the diffraction patterns recorded at each pressure with the incident x-ray beam perpendicular to the load axis of the DAC (radial diffraction). The maximum pressure reached was 37.6 GPa. The compressive strength (differential stress) ...

X-ray diffraction study of the single-crystal elastic moduli of -Fe up to 30 GPa

[1] Room temperature investigations of the single-crystal elastic moduli and anisotropy of the phase of iron are performed up to 30.3 GPa using the radial X-ray diffraction technique. The accuracy of the calculated elastic moduli has improved compared to previous measurements using similar techniques because of an increase in accuracy of the measurement, confinement of the sample to limit the e...

Brillouin scattering and X-ray diffraction of San Carlos olivine: direct pressure determination to 32 GPa

The single-crystal elastic moduli of San Carlos olivine, (Mg0.9Fe0.1)2SiO4, were determined at seven pressures between 2.5 and 32.5 GPa by Brillouin spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell. The unit cell volume was also determined at each pressure (and ambient pressure) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The shear elastic moduli exhibit non-linear pressure dependencies. In particular, a non-line...

Elastic constants of fibre-textured thin films determined by X-ray diffraction

A new methodology is presented that allows the rapid determination of elastic constants of cubic fibre-textured thin films by X-ray diffraction. The theoretical concept is developed and tested on calculated examples of Cu and CrN films. The mechanical elastic constants are extrapolated from X-ray elastic constants by taking into consideration crystal and macroscopic elastic anisotropy. The deri...
